Poor Little Posh Girl
I am thoroughly enjoying my Kindle these days, but I am so disappointed in the "recommended" Kindle singles they list. For example, Oxford Girl by Plum Sykes was a waste of time and money. Fortunately, it not much money, nor much time either, since it was only 25 pages long.
While I loved my time at Oxford and may have had expectations of this story bringing back fond memories, instead I was just annoyed. She talks about being snobby, shallow and privileged but also poor with such a casual and proud attitude. Bleh.

Meet My Monroe
I once had a very wise professor advise me that I should write more stories about my dog. And I will admit - Monroe is pretty entertaining. Not just too me, but to everyone who meets him! I have had a lot of folks tell me that they either want to adopt him or steal him.....

Tuesday Travel Tip
York, England - city view |
I distinctly remember doing this in York, England and ending up in a warm and inviting pub that served a delicious stew and said they had a good band playing later that night. I totally do not remember the name of the place but it turned out to be fun!
And if you find yourself traveling around England and visiting lots of the beautiful Anglican cathedrals, be sure to stay for evensong....

Yummm.... curry and veggies
One of the things I love about making Thai curry for dinner is that it tastes even better the next day when the spices have more time to come forward. Another is that you can choose meat or vegetarian versions that are equally tasty and satisfying.

"Summer drinks make me feel fine...."
As the weather gets hot, thouights turn to pool parties and hanging out on the porch with friends, having a few cocktails and dreaming of beach vacations. The debate about the perfect summer drink has a very wide range amongme and my friends. Some go for the umbrella drinks, margaritas and mojitos....
The only problem with mojitos is that they are a bit labor intensive. If you are not careful you will find yourself spending far too much time muddling sugar and mint instead of enjoying the company of your friends. However, that combination of sweet and citrus and mint is light and refreshing when you are enjoying the sunny weather. And non-alcoholic version is just as tasty, particularly when made with soda water and not sprite (then it becomes too sweet for my taste).
Also what I do love this time of year is watermelon! If you want to turn it into a cocktail, there are couple of ways to go about it.....

Thursday Travel Tip
I am always worried about losing my important documents like my passport when I travel. So I always put copies of the front page (the one with the picture and personal info) in my luggage. It identifies who owns the luggage and then I have extra copies just in case the actual passport gets lost or stolen. I also have scanned it into my computer and emailed it to myself and usually to a family member as well. That way there is an electronic copy that can be accessed from anywhere if it is needed.
You then can carry the paper copy with you instead of the real one if you feel more comfortable having it around all the time. Then if you have a secure place to lock up the real one you don't have to worry. It is rare that you would need it with you but I have had an occasion when they needed my passport number in order to get into a secure building for the interview I was conducting that day. (And yes - it was both a little disturbing and at the same time super cool to have to get clearance to go in and to sign papers promising to not reveal any industrial secrets based on what I observed. I was finally an important American journalist working on an assignment in a foreign country!)

Summer Swim Team Memories
Running by the neighborhood swim club I heard sounds from my past. The distinct noises of the splashes of swimmers and the cheers of the crowd. As I turned to run back up the road to my house, the announcer called the next heat to the starting blocks.... I could smell the chlorine and feel the adrenaline of reaching down to the edge of the platform - muscles tensing, ready to spring off that board and into that cold, but welcoming water. It is that strange combination of nervous fear and comfort of the old-hat routine that sufaces because you have spent hours and years to this over and over again.
As the Olympics approach soon - I also remember that I wasn't a world-class athlete like so many of my teammates. I was fortunate to grow up and go to school in a place that regularly produced Olympic swimmers, gold medalists even. But I knew that I was doing well to swim in a fast paced heat during meets, much less actually achieve a decent time.
But for years when I was young I spent all day at the pool and loved it. As much as early morning swim practice was brutal, it meant that afterward I got to hang out and play at the pool with my friends. We ran around the tennis courts, leaped from the diving board, called marco polo and basked in the sun for hours. I learned what shampoo gets the chorline smell out of hair, the grape soda attracts the most bees, and an eyedropper of milk soothes sore eyes irritated by the pool chemicals.
And now even though I am really a distance runner at heart, I desperately want to go swim laps and do toe-touches off the diving board and relive those fun carefree summer moments again.

Postcard or Personal Picture?
That's right folks! It is time to play "Postcard or Personal Pic?"
And how does this game work? Well.... I post images and you guess whether they are travel photos I have taken or are they postcards I have scanned and added to my blog.
I tend to collect a lot of postcards on trips. Very often the professionals do a much better job than I ever could at capturing the grandeur and scope of a scene, particularly at night. Plus if I buy 2 of each card then I have one to send to a friend and one to keep for myself. This also works really well for remembering artwork I loved in the museums. Many places do not allow photography, even without a flash, in order to protect the paintings and I try to follow the rules. Sometimes I even frame the postcards later - kind of a compact version of a proper print, but much less expensive.

Berries, Berries, Berries!
The berry picking trip this past weekend was a huge success! We got the past of the strawberries and some of the early blackberries and blueberries. It really was too soon for the blueberries so that became tedious very quickly but eventually we got an almost full bucket. It is addictive - the constant discovery of more ripe ones. Like a treasure or Easter egg hunt.
I have heard good things about the blueberry farm in Social Circle but this time we went to Washington Farms in Watkinsville, GA because they have all three kinds that everyone in my group wanted to pick. I don't think that they are organic but they are local and definitely very tasty.

Home Gardening is Good
So excited to see that my small garden is growing! I have been moving
the plants around in front of my porch in order to help them get enough
sunlight to not only grow - but produce blooms and fruit. Actually
these are veggies... the long awaited appearance of zucchini blossoms
and evidence that I may have some cucumbers.
